...they might export commodities to you. If they export commodities to you, you might replace some of your domestic production with their imports. If you decrease your domestic production while importing more, you might have a trade deficit.
Jayson Beckman, Michael Yanney Chair at the Yeutter Institute, examines why the U.S. agricultural trade balance has shifted into deficit. While the U.S. leads in bulk commodity exports, imports of consumer-oriented products (like greenhouse-grown tomatoes from Mexico and Canada) have grown six times faster than exports.
